Scientism

The philosophical view that the natural sciences — and the methods of the natural sciences — provide the only legitimate form of knowledge, or the only reliable guide to what is real. Scientism is not the same as science. Science is a set of methods (observation, experiment, falsification, peer review) for producing knowledge of the natural world. Scientism is a philosophical claim about knowledge: that the scientific method exhausts the domain of what can be known.

The term is typically pejorative: few people describe themselves as scientism’s advocates, and most prefer formulations like ‘naturalism,’ ‘empiricism,’ or ‘the scientific world-view.’ The critical analysis of scientism — identifying what it claims, examining whether those claims are coherent, and assessing what falls outside its reach — is a recurring thread in John Lennox, Iain McGilchrist, and, more ambiguously, Steven Pinker.

The core argument against scientism: self-refutation

The most powerful objection to scientism is that it refutes itself. The claim ‘only what is scientifically verifiable counts as knowledge’ is not itself scientifically verifiable. It is a philosophical (specifically, epistemological) claim that cannot be established by observation, experiment, or any other scientific procedure. If the claim is true, it is not knowledge; if it is knowledge, it must have been acquired by means other than the scientific method — undermining the claim.

The Vienna Circle’s logical positivism (1920s–1930s) made the same move in a different form: ‘a statement is meaningful only if it is either analytically true or empirically verifiable.’ This principle of verification — the core of logical positivism — was itself neither analytically true nor empirically verifiable. The Vienna Circle’s programme collapsed under this self-refutation, and the contemporary philosophy of science mostly regards it as definitively discredited.

John Lennox uses this argument repeatedly: ‘scientism is self-refuting because its central thesis cannot be verified by the methods it recommends.’ He attributes the insight to Ludwig Wittgenstein’s observation that the limits of language are the limits of one’s world — which, turned outward, implies that propositions about the limits of knowledge are not themselves produced by operating within those limits.

Lennox: science versus atheism, not science versus Christianity

Lennox’s central rhetorical move is to reframe the cultural debate. The standard narrative: science and religion conflict; Galileo and Darwin defeated the Church; the march of science steadily displaces religious belief. Lennox’s counter: the conflict is not between science and Christianity but between science and atheism.

His argument: science operates at the level of mechanism — how things work, what the regularities are, what the material processes are. It does not operate at the level of agency — why things exist, what the purpose of processes is, whether there is a mind behind the laws. These are complementary, not competing, kinds of explanation. The danger of conflating science with atheism:

  1. Science becomes ideology rather than method — a way of defending a metaphysical view rather than a procedure for investigating the world.
  2. It alienates scientists who are not atheists (of whom there have historically been many: Newton, Maxwell, Collins, Lemaitre).
  3. It misrepresents what science actually claims: no experiment has established that there is no God; that is a philosophical claim, not a scientific result.

Lennox’s specific target: the New Atheism’s implicit assumption that the universe is a self-explaining system — that the existence of laws of physics eliminates the need for an explanatory ground for those laws. He argues this is a category error: describing how the universe operates is not the same as explaining why there is a universe to operate. See Theodicy and Materialism.

McGilchrist: scientism as left-hemisphere imperialism

McGilchrist’s critique of scientism is structural rather than argumentative. He does not primarily engage with scientism’s internal incoherence; he identifies its cultural origins in the dominance of a particular mode of attending.

The left hemisphere, on his account, is the hemisphere of analysis, abstraction, decontextualisation, and formalisation. It works by reducing complex wholes to simpler parts, expressing the particular in terms of the universal, and treating the measurable as the real. This mode of attending is powerful — it is how modern science, mathematics, engineering, and law work. But it is not, for McGilchrist, the whole of cognition; it is a tool that must operate within a broader mode of knowing provided by the right hemisphere.

Scientism, on McGilchrist’s reading, is what happens when the left hemisphere’s mode of attending is elevated to a totalising world-view — when the tool claims to be the whole workshop. The consequences:

  • Loss of the particular: science works by abstracting from the particular instance to the universal law. This is epistemically productive in many domains but loses what is irreducible about individual cases — the texture of experience, the significance of suffering, the meaning of a life.
  • Loss of the body: embodied, pre-linguistic knowing is systematically excluded from the category of knowledge. Intuition, tacit knowledge, and perceptual attunement become ‘mere subjectivity.’
  • Loss of value: science describes what is, not what ought to be. Scientism, by insisting that only the scientifically describable is real, implies that values are not real — which is flatly self-undermining for any human project, including science itself.
  • Loss of the sacred: the fourth epistemological pathway McGilchrist identifies — the experience of the sacred, the encounter with what exceeds our categories — is excluded from knowledge by definition.

McGilchrist is not anti-science. He regards reductionist analysis as genuinely productive in its proper domain. He is anti-the-reduction-of-all-knowing-to-reductionist-analysis. The critique is aimed not at scientific method but at the philosophical inflation of scientific method into a metaphysical claim about what is real. See Hemisphere Lateralisation and Rationality.

Pinker: sympathetic but distinct

Pinker presents the most complex position. He is an explicit champion of the Enlightenment commitment to science, reason, and empiricism, and he sometimes uses language that sounds like scientism:

‘Science is not just one way of knowing — it is the way of knowing. Only science can tell us what the world is like.’

But in context, Pinker’s claim is more modest. He distinguishes:

  • Scientism as hubris: the naive claim that science can answer all questions, including ethical and aesthetic ones, simply by measuring things.
  • The scientific world-view: the commitment to treating claims as hypotheses that must be tested against evidence, abandoning them when evidence runs against them, and accepting the results of this process even when they are uncomfortable.

Pinker endorses the second and rejects the first. He accepts that science cannot derive values from facts (Hume’s is-ought distinction), and he regards ethical reasoning as an autonomous domain. His secular humanism is not a scientific theory but a commitment — to human flourishing, to reason, to the reduction of suffering — that he believes is consistent with science but not derivable from it.

This leaves Pinker in an unstable position in the Lennox/McGilchrist critique: he accepts that scientism in its crude form is false, but his broader programme depends on the assumption that the scientific world-view, broadly construed, is self-sufficient — that it does not require a transcendent ground, a richer epistemology, or anything beyond the empirical track record of science to justify itself. Both Lennox and McGilchrist challenge this assumption from different angles.

Where mainstream views differ

The mainstream in philosophy of science is anti-scientism: philosophers from Popper to Kuhn to Feyerabend have argued that science is more complex, more contingent, and more limited than its popular image suggests. The Vienna Circle’s verification principle is regarded as definitively defeated. Most philosophers accept that ethical, aesthetic, mathematical, and metaphysical claims cannot be adjudicated by scientific experiment.

The harder question is whether the failure of crude scientism leaves any distinctive role for science in epistemology, or whether it collapses into a general empiricism that is one epistemic tradition among many. Here the debate divides:

The naturalist defence: science earns its privileged status not by definition but by track record. No other procedure for producing reliable knowledge about the natural world has come close to its success rate. Naturalised epistemology (Quine) holds that epistemology is a branch of natural science — the study of how organisms form beliefs — not an a priori inquiry that regulates science from outside.

The Lennox-type realist critique: science’s track record is only possible because reason is reliable and the universe is rationally ordered — both facts that require explanation. Scientism cannot explain them; theism provides the explanation. The Logos argument from Language and Mind is the key move here: the rational intelligibility of the universe to the human mind is not what you would predict on a purely evolutionary account of cognition, but it is exactly what you would expect if the universe was created by a rational being and humans were made in that being’s image.

The McGilchrist-type participatory critique: science works by standing back from the world, treating it as an object of investigation, and applying formal procedures. But the standing back presupposes a prior engagement — a participatory knowing that is not itself scientific. Heidegger called this the ready-to-hand (the hammer you are using) versus the present-at-hand (the hammer you are studying when it breaks). Scientific knowledge is structurally derivative of a prior, more immediate, and less formal acquaintance with the world.

The upshot: all three speakers — Lennox, McGilchrist, and (partially) Pinker — converge on the view that crude scientism is false. They diverge on what this implies: for Lennox, it points toward God; for McGilchrist, it points toward a richer epistemology that includes the sacred; for Pinker, it is simply a mistake to be corrected within the broadly naturalist world-view.
