Language and Mind
The relation between language and thought — whether language constitutes thought, whether it is a tool of thought, whether it is an obstacle to knowledge, or whether its very existence implies something about the nature of reality. Steven Pinker approaches this as a cognitive scientist: language is an evolved biological instinct. Iain McGilchrist approaches it as a neuroscientist: language is primarily a left-hemisphere tool that, when dominant, distorts our grasp of reality. John Lennox approaches it as a mathematician and theologian: the logical structure of the universe is the Logos — the word or rational principle — of a Creator.
Pinker: language as biological instinct
Pinker’s foundational claim (The Language Instinct, 1994): language is not a cultural invention, like writing or the wheel, but a biological specialisation that evolved in the human lineage. The evidence includes the universality of language across all human cultures, the predictable developmental trajectory in children (even under impoverished input), the existence of language-specific brain regions (Broca’s, Wernicke’s), and the emergence of creole languages by children from mixed pidgin inputs.
Language and thought are partly separable. The language of thought hypothesis (Fodor): there is a language-independent ‘mentalese’ in which conceptual content is encoded. Surface language — English, Mandarin, Swahili — is a translation layer. Pinker deploys this against the Whorfian hypothesis (that language determines thought): speakers of different languages, despite different surface structures, share broadly similar conceptual spaces. The evidence from colour categorisation, spatial reasoning, and number concepts supports the view that thought outstrips language.
The stuff of thought: Pinker’s later work argues that language encodes a structured conceptual geometry — events with causes, agents, and patients; objects with properties; relations between things. This conceptual geometry is not arbitrary but tracks deep features of how the world is structured. The metaphors embedded in everyday language (argument as war, time as a resource, the mind as a container) reveal the cognitive templates through which humans model their experience.
The curse of knowledge: communicators often fail because they cannot remember what it was like not to know something. Language becomes opaque when the shared conceptual context assumed by the speaker is absent in the listener — a failure mode with implications for writing, teaching, and scientific communication.
McGilchrist: language as left-hemisphere tool
McGilchrist’s central claim: the left hemisphere specialises in denotative, literal, sequential language — the kind that labels, classifies, and categorises. The right hemisphere specialises in the implicit, the metaphorical, the tonal, and the contextual: the music of language, not its lexical content.
This is not a strict localisation claim. McGilchrist is not saying the right hemisphere has no role in language processing. He is saying that the kind of language dominates our culture — propositional, analytic, categorical — is the left hemisphere’s contribution. The right hemisphere’s contribution — metaphor, implication, tone, context, the meaning that exceeds the literal — is increasingly devalued.
The danger: when language becomes the primary mode of attending to the world, we mistake the map for the territory. The word ‘tree’ is not a tree; the concept ‘consciousness’ is not consciousness; the model ‘neuron’ is not what it is like to see red. Left-hemisphere dominance mistakes its own representations for reality, generating what McGilchrist calls ‘self-referring vortices of abstraction’ — theoretical structures that are internally coherent but have lost contact with the thing they were supposed to describe.
Metaphor is not a decoration on thought but a primary cognitive mode — a claim McGilchrist shares with George Lakoff and Pinker. The difference: for McGilchrist, the suppression of metaphorical and analogical thinking (right hemisphere) in favour of literal, propositional thinking (left hemisphere) is a cultural pathology with identifiable consequences in science, philosophy, and politics.
Silence and the unsayable: McGilchrist repeatedly invokes Wittgenstein — ‘Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent’ — but draws the opposite lesson from the positivists. The limits of language are not the limits of reality; the things that cannot be said are often the most important things. Music, gesture, art, and the phenomenology of lived experience carry content that resists propositional encoding, and that content is real.
Lennox: the Logos argument
John Lennox‘s engagement with language operates at a different level: not cognitive but metaphysical. The Gospel of John opens: ‘In the beginning was the Logos, and the Logos was with God, and the Logos was God.’ The Greek word logos carries a double meaning: word (language) and reason/rational principle.
Lennox’s argument: the universe is rationally ordered — ordered in a way that mathematics, which is itself a kind of language, can capture with unreasonable effectiveness (the Wigner puzzle). Human minds, equipped with language and mathematics, can read the book of nature. This correspondence — mind, language, and physical reality all sharing a rational structure — is not explained by materialism or evolutionary naturalism. It is explained by the thesis that all three share a common rational origin: the Logos, the rational principle that is the Creator.
This is not a linguistic argument in the cognitive-science sense. It is a transcendental argument: the very existence of rational language capable of tracking reality presupposes that reality is the kind of thing that can be tracked by rational language — and that minds are the kind of thing capable of doing the tracking. For Lennox, this mutual fitness of mind and world is evidence of design.
The connection to the hard problem: if the brain is a product of blind material forces, there is no reason to expect it to produce truth-tracking capacities. But language does track truth — scientific language describes reality with precision, mathematical language predicts physical phenomena to twelve decimal places. The success of science is a datum that requires explanation. Lennox: ‘Science assumes rational intelligibility; it cannot explain it.‘
Convergence and divergence
Where all three agree: human language is not a transparent window on reality. Pinker identifies cognitive biases embedded in the way metaphors structure thought. McGilchrist argues that propositional language systematically impoverishes experience. Lennox argues that the natural world exceeds what can be fully captured in human language.
Where they diverge: Pinker treats the limitations of language as limitations of our cognitive architecture — mismatch between the Pleistocene mind and modern environments. McGilchrist treats them as expressions of left-hemisphere dominance — a correctable cultural pathology. Lennox treats the existence of effective language as pointing beyond itself — to a rational structure in reality that language participates in without exhausting.
The Logos as point of convergence between McGilchrist and Lennox: in their reported conversations, McGilchrist — arriving from neuroscience and phenomenology — reached the conclusion that ‘we must make room for God.’ The Logos framing provides one route to that conclusion: if rational language is not an accident of evolution but a participation in the rational structure of reality, the step from logos-in-mind to Logos-in-being is not long.
Where mainstream views differ
The Whorfian hypothesis (language shapes thought) has experienced a partial rehabilitation in the weak form — linguistic categories systematically nudge attention, memory, and categorisation, even if they do not determine thought. The strong form (language determines thought, speakers of different languages inhabit different conceptual worlds) remains contested and largely rejected.
Chomsky’s Universal Grammar — that there is an innate language acquisition device — has been challenged on both computational (statistical learning in connectionist models) and empirical (cross-linguistic variation in grammatical structure) grounds. The ‘language instinct’ remains influential but no longer commands the consensus it held in the 1990s.
McGilchrist’s hemispheric claims remain contested in academic neuroscience. The pop-psychology version (‘left brain = logic, right brain = creativity’) was already rejected by the 1980s; McGilchrist’s more nuanced claim about modes of attending is harder to test directly.
