Consciousness
The fact that there is something it is like to be a creature with a brain — that experience happens at all, from the inside — is the deepest unsolved problem in philosophy of mind. It is the one case where the standard scientific reduction (explain X by describing its parts and their interactions) breaks down most visibly: a complete account of neural activity in physical terms seems to leave untouched the question of why any of it should feel like anything.
The easy and hard problems
David Chalmers’s distinction (1995):
Easy problems — explaining how the brain performs its cognitive functions: perceiving, integrating information, attending, controlling behaviour, reporting mental states. They are ‘easy’ in principle: we understand roughly what an explanation would look like, even if the details remain to be filled in. Progress is real and measurable.
The hard problem — why there is subjective experience at all. Why does the processing of visual information feel like seeing red? Why does the memory of a loss feel like grief? No third-person physical description of a brain state — however complete — tells you why there is something it is like to be in that state. The explanatory gap between function and experience does not close no matter how much neuroscience we add. This is not ignorance; it may be a structural feature of the way mind and matter relate.
Thomas Nagel’s formulation: what is it like to be a bat? The bat’s sonar experience is presumably something from the inside, but no amount of physical or functional information about its auditory cortex tells us what that is. Even the bat’s own brain circuitry doesn’t tell us what it’s like.
Main positions
Eliminativism (Dennett)
Consciousness — in the sense of genuine phenomenal experience, qualia — is an illusion generated by the brain’s narrative-building systems. There is no ‘Cartesian theatre’ in which experience is displayed. The hard problem is a pseudo-problem: once we explain all the functions, there is nothing left to explain. ‘Fame in the brain, not Cartesian grace.’ The apparent residue of unexplained experience dissolves under examination.

Biological naturalism (Searle)
Consciousness is a genuine biological phenomenon that emerged from specific neural architectures in vertebrates and cephalopods. It is as natural as digestion — a higher-level property of an organised system — but not computationally realisable. Intelligence (adaptive response to inputs) is not consciousness. A chess computer, a self-driving car, and a large language model are intelligent systems that are not conscious, just as a heart valve is a physical system but not alive. The hard problem is real, not illusory, but it doesn’t point beyond the biological.
Anil Seth supplies the positive mechanism the bald identity leaves out. Dissatisfied with merely asserting that consciousness is what living systems have, he argues that a brain’s what-it-is cannot be prised apart from its what-it-does — a mutual entanglement he calls generative entrenchment, and the reason the standard neuron-replacement thought experiment quietly fails: some neurons fire spikes partly to clear metabolic waste, so a functionally faithful silicon neuron would itself need a metabolism, at which point one has rebuilt a biological cell rather than engineered a computer. From there a line runs from perception as prediction (the brain as a ‘controlled hallucination’) down through Karl Friston’s free-energy principle to metabolism and autopoiesis — a living system continually holding itself out of thermodynamic equilibrium. The step Seth openly flags as unfinished is joining information-theoretic free energy (prediction error) to thermodynamic free energy (the energetics of being alive). The payoff is a specific verdict on machine minds: intelligence (doing) is substrate-independent, but consciousness (feeling) may not be, so a fluent large language model can be highly intelligent and still not conscious.
Relevance to the wiki: Jim Rutt articulates a version of this position in his conversations with Iain McGilchrist; Anil Seth gives it its most developed mechanistic form (see Anil Seth on Consciousness, Machine Sentience, and Why Intelligence Isn't Awareness). It is the default position of most neuroscientists.
Mysterianism (McGinn, Nagel, Pinker)
There is something it is like to have experience. This is real, not illusory. All conscious experience has a physical correlate — we know this from neuroscience. But why any physical process feels like something is not answered by that correlation, and may be permanently beyond human intuitive grasp — not because of undiscovered physics, but because the mind reflecting on its own nature is constitutionally limited.
Steven Pinker’s formulation: ‘there are facts about the universe that are true, and we’ll never be satisfied that we intuitively understand them.’ The hard problem is a wall, not a window: it does not justify inferring a non-physical dimension. Compare: what existed before the Big Bang? Can the universe be both finite and infinite? Some questions expose the limits of the instruments we would use to answer them.
Pinker distinguishes his view from:
- Eliminativism: the hard problem is real, not illusory
- Dualism: the physical correlates are real; there is no extra-physical causation
- Theism: the wall does not indicate something beyond the physical; it indicates a limitation of human cognition
Panpsychism (McGilchrist)
If consciousness cannot emerge from unconscious matter (the explanatory gap is real), it must be foundational — an ontological primitive, present at every scale of organisation, not produced by biology but expressed by it in its most complex forms. Iain McGilchrist: ‘nobody has the slightest idea how consciousness could come from biochemistry.’ Ramachandran and Blakemore in the Oxford Handbook of Science concede the point: we ‘may just have to accept that consciousness is an ontological primitive.’
This does not make rocks conscious in the human sense. It claims that proto-experiential properties are present everywhere, and that human consciousness is a complex, organised manifestation of something more basic. The position is held by philosophers David Chalmers, Galen Strawson, and Philip Goff, and is a minority but not fringe position in professional philosophy of mind.
McGilchrist adds a distinctive frame: consciousness is not the last thing the universe produced but the first thing we understand from the inside. Relations are prior to relata — the web comes first, the nodes are abstractions from it. The right hemisphere, with its broad attending and contextual awareness, grasps this primacy; the left, focused and abstracting, misses it.

Illusionism (Frankish)
Keith Frankish‘s illusionism is a refined eliminativism that accepts the reality of consciousness in the functional sense while denying that qualia — raw, ineffable, private phenomenal properties — exist as ordinarily conceived. The position: consciousness is real, but introspection systematically misrepresents functional brain states as having non-physical qualitative properties they do not possess. What appears to be a further fact about the redness of red, over and above its functional role, is a representational artefact, not a feature of the world. The hard problem is therefore dissolved rather than solved: it is a pseudo-problem generated by introspective error rather than a genuine explanandum awaiting a physical explanation. Frankish distinguishes illusionism from Dennett’s eliminativism by acknowledging that the illusion is real and systematic — ‘the illusion of consciousness is a kind of consciousness’ — while insisting that what is real is the functional state, not the phenomenal gloss introspection projects onto it. Theistic realism (Lennox)
John Lennox‘s position is not strictly a theory of consciousness but a reading of what the hard problem implies. Materialism’s premise — that mind is entirely a product of mindless matter — is self-refuting: if the brain is entirely the product of a process that selects for survival rather than truth, there is no reason to trust it to reach reliable conclusions, including conclusions about materialism. This is the Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism (Lewis, Plantinga). The hard problem is not a wall but an indication that the materialist frame is structurally inadequate.
Lennox does not reduce God to an explanation for consciousness; he argues that theism — specifically the claim that a rational mind underlies the cosmos — provides a more natural grounding for the rational intelligibility of the universe (including the fact that our minds can probe it) than naturalism does.
The McGilchrist connection: in a direct conversation Lennox reports, McGilchrist said ‘we must make room for God.’ His analysis of left-hemisphere dominance — materialism as a mode of attending that impoverishes reality — converges with Lennox’s diagnosis from mathematics and theology, arriving at the same destination by different routes.
Dualism, substance and property (Swinburne)
The classical position, and the one against which most of the others define themselves: mind and matter are distinct kinds of thing. Richard Swinburne, the best-known contemporary defender, argues substance dualism independently of his Christian commitments — the soul is a separate substance, not a property of the body.
Emergent dualism is the interesting hybrid: everything is physical, but at a certain complexity — brains — psychophysical laws of the universe produce a genuinely non-physical element that, as Robert Lawrence Kuhn puts it, ‘pops out’. It reaches a dualist conclusion by a broadly physicalist route, which is why it sits awkwardly in most taxonomies.
Property dualism keeps one substance and doubles the properties. Kuhn flags the contrast between property dualism and non-reductive physicalism as one of the field’s most revealing comparisons, and one that is ‘epistemological more than ontological’ — the two can agree on every fact about the world and still describe it differently. Idealism (as distinct from panpsychism)
Panpsychism and idealism are routinely conflated, and the difference is ontological weight. Panpsychism keeps the physical world fully real and adds experience to it. Idealism makes the physical derivative of consciousness — or, in the Vedic route, illusory outright.
Between them sits cosmopsychism, where the whole universe is the conscious thing and individual minds are divisions of it, and panprotopsychism, where what is distributed is not experience but proto-experience. Kuhn treats these as a hierarchy rather than a binary, which is what makes the cosmopsychism-versus-idealism comparison worth drawing at all.
Monism (Davidson, Papineau)
One stuff, two expressions — and the label almost everyone wants. Donald Davidson’s anomalous monism runs from three premises (mental events cause physical events; causation requires strict law; there are no strict psychophysical laws) to the conclusion that the mental and the physical must be the same thing described two ways.
David Papineau’s radical identity theory presses harder: mental and physical are identical in the strong sense that the morning star and the evening star are both Venus. Take one away and the other goes with it — there is no residue to explain.
Quantum theories
Kuhn separates these from materialism rather than folding them in. The best-known is Penrose–Hameroff, where consciousness arises from the collapse of the wave function inside neuronal microtubules. Hartmut Neven’s rival account inverts the mechanism: consciousness is in the formation of the wave function, not its collapse — the two are making opposite bets on the same physics, so at most one can be right. Bernard Carr’s dimensional theories, built partly on parapsychological claims, extend the category further from orthodox materialism while remaining, in some sense, physicalist.
Integrated information theory (Tononi, Koch)
Consciousness is integrated information, quantified as Φ — a system is conscious to the degree that its information is unified rather than decomposable. Giulio Tononi and Christof Koch put a foundational ontology into information itself, which is why IIT resists neat placement: information can be part of the physical world, yet the theory treats it as fundamental.
It is also the field’s live scandal. 124 philosophers and scientists signed a letter calling IIT a pseudoscience — a charge Kuhn thinks lands harder than any other available: ‘I can say you’re ugly and you’re stupid. To say pseudoscience is worse than that.’ IIT’s defenders reject the related accusation that it is panpsychism in disguise.
Where mainstream views differ
Academic consensus (such as it is) leans toward some version of biological naturalism or functionalism — consciousness is a real biological phenomenon but not irreducibly non-physical. Most neuroscientists treat the hard problem as a genuine puzzle but not as proof of anything beyond the brain.
Eliminativism is the preferred position of some cognitive scientists (Dennett, Churchland) who hold that phenomenal consciousness is a folk-psychological concept that will dissolve under better neuroscience, the way ‘caloric’ dissolved under thermodynamics.
Panpsychism is gaining traction in academic philosophy of mind (Goff’s Galileo’s Error brought it into mainstream discussion) but is still a minority position and is criticised for the combination problem: how do micro-experiential properties combine to form unified human consciousness?
Mysterianism (Pinker, McGinn) is underrepresented in popular discussions, which tend to polarise between eliminativism and dualism. It is philosophically careful but risks becoming unfalsifiable: ‘we’ll never understand this’ is difficult to distinguish from ‘we don’t understand this yet.’
Theistic realism (Lennox) is not a scientific hypothesis; it operates at a different explanatory level. Most professional philosophers of mind do not engage with it as a theory of consciousness per se, though the Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism has serious philosophical discussion in epistemology.
