Levels of Explanation
The principle that a single phenomenon can be correctly and completely described by multiple explanatory frameworks operating at different levels, without any one level reducing, replacing, or contradicting the others. Each level answers a different kind of question; the explanatory levels are not in competition.
The core structure
Consider a boiling kettle. Two explanations:
- Mechanistic: Heat from the element increases the kinetic energy of water molecules until they reach vaporisation temperature — a thermodynamic account.
- Intentional: The water is boiling because someone wants a cup of tea — a purposive account giving the agent’s reason.
Both are true simultaneously. Neither replaces the other. Adding a chemical account does not make the intentional account redundant; adding the intentional account does not make the chemistry incomplete.
The same structure applies across many domains:

Why the distinction matters
A common error — sometimes called nothing-buttery or eliminative reductionism — is to assume that once a mechanistic explanation is given, other levels become redundant: the kettle is ‘nothing but’ molecular motion; the music is ‘nothing but’ air pressure waves; the universe is ‘nothing but’ particles and fields. This inference is not licensed. A complete thermodynamic account of the kettle does not address why the agent put the kettle on.
John Lennox makes this the central argument in his rebuttal of the claim that science displaces God: God as creator and sustainer of the universe is not a competing hypothesis with physics; he operates at a different explanatory level. The law of gravity describes how masses interact; it does not answer why there is gravity, why the universe is mathematically ordered, or why it exists. The Wittgenstein observation
Wittgenstein noted that ‘the great delusion of modernism is that the laws of nature are explanations of phenomena.’ Laws are descriptions of regularities, not explanations of why those regularities hold. The question ‘why does the law of gravity take the form it does?’ is not answerable by physics; it calls for a different level of inquiry.
Relation to consciousness
The levels-of-explanation principle is central in philosophy of mind. The ‘hard problem’ of consciousness (see Consciousness) arises precisely because mechanistic accounts — even a complete neuroscience — seem to leave the intentional/experiential level unexplained. Why there is ‘something it is like’ to be a creature with certain neural processes is a question that a third-person mechanistic account cannot answer at its own level.
Iain McGilchrist approaches the same issue from the opposite direction: he argues that the right hemisphere grasps the world as a living, purposive whole, while the left hemisphere decomposes it into mechanistic parts. The Aunt Matilda analogy
Lennox uses this to show that intentional knowledge (knowledge of why) cannot always be recovered by mechanistic inquiry:
Every scientist analyses Aunt Matilda’s cake and produces a comprehensive account of flour, chemistry, and heat transfer. None can say why she made it — unless she tells them. When she says ‘for cousin Jane,’ that is not anti-scientific; it is information of a kind science cannot generate from the ingredients alone.
The analogy models the claim that revelation (in the theological sense) is the appropriate epistemic route to intentional-level knowledge about the universe’s purpose — not a substitute for science, but an answer to a question science cannot frame.
