Science and Religion

The relationship between scientific inquiry and religious belief is one of the most contested questions in modern intellectual life. The dominant popular narrative — science and religion in perpetual warfare, science advancing as religion retreats — is a historiographical construction of the late nineteenth century (White and Draper’s ‘conflict thesis’) that is not supported by most historians of science. The actual relationship is more complex: cooperation, compartmentalisation, tension, and mutual fertilisation have all been present at different times and on different questions.

The conflict thesis and its critics

The ‘warfare model’ holds that science and religion are fundamentally incompatible worldviews competing for the same territory: explanations of natural phenomena. As science explains more, God is displaced. The model has narrative appeal but poor historical evidence.

John Lennox identifies the real tension as science versus atheism, not science versus Christianity. Atheism (in its materialist form) is a philosophical position about what is real; science is a method for investigating regularities in the natural world. When scientists like Stephen Hawking or Richard Dawkins argue from cosmology or biology to atheist conclusions, they are doing philosophy, not science. The founders of the scientific tradition — Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, Kelvin, Mendel — were predominantly theists who saw their work as ‘thinking God’s thoughts after him.’

The Nobel laureate data (Baruch Aba Shalev, 100 Years of Nobel Prizes, 2003): Lennox cites a figure of 65%+ of Nobel laureates expressing belief in God. The exact percentage depends on how ‘belief’ is operationalised and has been disputed. Levels of explanation: the non-competition argument

The cleanest philosophical rebuttal of the conflict thesis is John Lennox‘s levels-of-explanation argument, also standard in philosophy of science and philosophy of religion.

A kettle is boiling. Two true and complete descriptions:

  1. Heat transfers kinetic energy to water molecules until they reach vaporisation temperature.
  2. I want a cup of tea.

Neither description replaces the other. Adding the thermodynamic account does not make the purposive account redundant; adding purpose does not make the chemistry incomplete. A complete account of a phenomenon at the mechanistic level does not exhaust what is true of it.

Applied to science and God: physical laws describe how the cosmos operates at the mechanistic level. The question ‘why is there a cosmos with such laws?’ is a different kind of question — not answerable by physics, which presupposes the existence of physical laws. Theism offers an answer at a different explanatory level, not a competing hypothesis within physics.

The God-of-the-gaps objection mistakes Lennox’s position for something it is not. The God of classical theism is not a placeholder for ignorance (explaining lightning before we understood electricity). Classical theism’s God is the primary cause — the ground of existence, the reason there are laws at all — not one mechanism among others. Newton’s Principia is the reference: Newton saw the law of gravity as revealing God’s sustaining activity, not as displacing God.

Scientism and its self-refutation

Scientism — the claim that science is the only valid form of knowledge — is the philosophical position that generates most genuine conflict between science and religion. It is not itself a scientific claim; it is a philosophical one. It is therefore self-refuting: if only scientific claims are valid, the claim that only scientific claims are valid is not valid.

Lennox’s crisp formulation: Is ‘science is the only way to truth’ a claim verified by science? No. Therefore, by its own criterion, it isn’t true.

Ludwig Wittgenstein’s parallel observation: ‘The great delusion of modernism is that the laws of nature are explanations of phenomena.’ Laws describe regularities; they don’t explain why those regularities exist or why they take the form they do. The question ‘why is the universe mathematically intelligible at all?’ is not answerable by mathematics; it requires a different level of inquiry.

Einstein’s ‘rational faith’: science depends on the assumption that the universe is ordered, mathematical, and accessible to reason. This assumption is not derivable from the universe itself — it is a productive faith, justified by its fruits. Lennox argues that theism grounds this assumption more naturally than materialism does: a rational God creating a rationally ordered cosmos explains why the universe should yield to mathematical description; brute-fact naturalism does not.

McGilchrist: science as one of four pathways

Iain McGilchrist approaches science-and-religion from a different angle — not apologetics but epistemology and neuroscience. His argument is not that science conflicts with religion but that left-hemisphere scientism impoverishes both:

The four pathways to any grip on reality: science, reason, intuition, imagination. All four are necessary; imagination and intuition are the most undervalued and historically the most productive in fundamental discovery. Scientists themselves report that major insights come in dreams, during walks, at the edge of sleep — not at the bench. Faraday’s electromagnetic field was an imaginative act before it was a mathematical one.

The left hemisphere, in McGilchrist’s framework, is the seat of narrow, focused, context-stripping attention — useful for formal deduction, measurement, and mechanism. The right hemisphere provides broad contextual awareness, embodied experience, the sense of meaning and value. Materialist science, practised with left-hemisphere dominance and treated as exhaustive, produces a map that mistakes itself for the territory.

McGilchrist explicitly told Lennox: ‘We must make room for God.’ He closed an Oxford lecture with the university’s motto, Dominus illuminatio mea (‘The Lord is my light’), as his final words. This represents a significant convergence: McGilchrist arrives at a need for the sacred not from theology but from the neuroscience of attention and the phenomenology of value.

Pinker: the Enlightenment as partial separation

Steven Pinker‘s position is distinct from both Lennox and McGilchrist. He does not argue for theism; he argues that the Enlightenment achieved a productive separation — not of science from religion wholesale, but of empirical claims from normative and metaphysical claims.

Where religion makes empirical claims (the age of the earth, the biological mechanism of disease), science is epistemically authoritative. Where religion addresses ultimate concerns — meaning, value, moral obligation — the Enlightenment’s contribution was to distinguish these from questions science can settle.

Pinker’s concern is that the Enlightenment separation is fragile: it requires institutions (free inquiry, separation of powers, freedom of conscience) that do not arise naturally from human tribal psychology and must be actively maintained. The McGilchrist contrast: Pinker accepts the sufficiency of reason and science within their domains; McGilchrist argues those domains are systematically underperceived because the mode of attention they require impoverishes the broader encounter with reality.

Douthat: convergent experience as evidence

Ross Douthat on Why Religion Makes More Sense Than You Think adds an evidentiary move the Lennox/McGilchrist/Pinker material does not make. Where that debate turns on levels of explanation — whether science and theism compete for the same explanatory territory — Douthat (defending Believe (Why Everyone Should Be Religious)) treats the recurring, cross-cultural character of religious and paranormal experience itself as a primary category of evidence. Near-death experiences, mystical states, and reports of the uncanny recur with similar structure across societies that did not borrow them from one another; that convergence, he argues, is data a purely materialist account has to explain away rather than explain.

He also presses a boundary case on evidentiary standards: video and documentary evidence are losing their probative force in a deepfake era just when phenomena like UAP sightings might otherwise have started to count — so the standards by which we would weigh anomalous experience are themselves eroding. Against this, Cowen argues a Bayesian scepticism, and self-identifies with a mysterian view of consciousness (‘the Colin McGinn view’). Douthat’s rejoinder runs through the quantum measurement problem: a measuring device without an observing consciousness ‘is itself just a ruler’, so consciousness cannot be tidily bracketed out of physics — a first-hand exchange between probabilistic supernaturalism and mysterian materialism that sits alongside the Consciousness page’s treatment of the same authors.

Where mainstream views differ

Academic historians of science largely reject the nineteenth-century conflict thesis. Figures such as John Hedley Brooke (Science and Religion, 1991) document cooperation and complexity rather than warfare. This is not in dispute among specialists, though the conflict narrative persists in popular culture.

Scientific consensus on empirical overlaps: where specific religious claims conflict with well-established science (young-earth creationism, denial of evolution), scientific evidence is rightly authoritative. This is not disputed by Lennox, McGilchrist, or mainstream philosophy of religion.

The ‘non-overlapping magisteria’ (NOMA) position (Gould): science covers the empirical, religion covers meaning and morals, and they do not overlap. Lennox accepts this framework partially but argues it is too weak: he wants to claim that theism also has explanatory power for empirical facts (the rational intelligibility of the universe, the fine-tuning of physical constants). Pinker accepts a version of NOMA. McGilchrist transcends it by questioning whether the empirical/normative division is itself clean.

New atheism (Dawkins, Hitchens): religion is not just false in its empirical claims but morally harmful; science-based atheism is the intellectually honest alternative. Lennox treats this as philosophy dressed as science; both make claims beyond the reach of empirical method.
