Hemisphere Lateralisation

The brain’s two hemispheres are not mirrors of each other with symmetric specialisations — they maintain fundamentally different modes of attending to the world. This is the framework developed by Iain McGilchrist in The Master and His Emissary (2009) and extended in The Matter with Things (2021).

The popular version — ‘left brain rational, right brain creative’ — is largely false and was extrapolated from split-brain research in the 1960s–70s that generated sweeping generalisations, almost all incorrect. McGilchrist’s account is based on clinical neuroimaging, Wada tests, comparative biology, and over 500 research citations.

Why two hemispheres evolved

McGilchrist’s answer to the evolutionary puzzle (why maintain a costly gap down the middle, with mostly inhibitory inter-hemispheric traffic?): all creatures with neural tissue need to pursue goals and stay safe simultaneously. Catching prey requires narrow focused attention; avoiding predators requires broad vigilant attention. A single architecture cannot do both at once without compromising each. The corpus callosum’s inhibitory function enables the right hand to know broadly what the left is doing while preventing mutual interference.

Evidence goes back to nematostella vectensis (700 million years old, the earliest ancestor with an asymmetrical neural network), suggesting this dual-attention architecture is the origin of higher brains, not a late evolutionary addition.

The presencing / re-presenting axis

The right hemisphere presences the world (Heidegger’s term): brings experience into vivid contextual being. The left re-presents it: substitutes an abstract representation for the thing. Once categorisation occurs, the gestalt is replaced by a diagram.

This is not a defect of the left hemisphere — representations are useful for manipulation, engineering, and formal inference. The pathology arises when the representation is mistaken for the reality it encodes (the map mistaken for the territory), which McGilchrist argues characterises contemporary Western modernity at institutional scale.

Cross-inhibition as opponent processing

Sherrington’s ‘opponent processing’: fine control through the balance of two opposing forces. The hemispheres cross-inhibit each other (each hemisphere’s frontal lobes inhibit its own posterior cortex; the right hemisphere also inhibits left-hemisphere over-confidence). When the right hemisphere is damaged or suppressed, the left’s optimism and certainty run unmoderated.

Clinical demonstration: Wada tests (one hemisphere anaesthetised) show the left fills personality inventories with unjustified self-congratulation; the right is mildly and accurately self-critical. Patients with right-hemisphere strokes deny obvious paralysis (anosognosia).

Cultural consequences

McGilchrist’s larger argument: Western modernity has systematically amplified left-hemisphere attending — through metrics, bureaucracy, reductionist science, social media (certainty in 280 characters), academic publish-or-perish (forced premature closure). The ‘meta-crisis’ — the cluster of civilisational stresses — may be, in his frame, a hemispheric attention disorder at scale.

Where mainstream views differ

Most cognitive neuroscientists accept the empirical asymmetries McGilchrist documents but resist the cultural-diagnostic move. The claim that hemisphere lateralisation drives civilisational dysfunction is not mainstream neuroscience. Critics note that lateralisation varies substantially across individuals and that the pop-science history McGilchrist critiques was never mainstream neuroscience either.
