Evolution

The theory that biological species descend with modification from common ancestors by natural selection acting on heritable variation. In its modern form (the Modern Synthesis), evolution combines Darwinian natural selection with Mendelian genetics and molecular biology to explain both the origin of diversity and the adaptation of organisms to environments.

Beyond its biological content, evolution is a cultural flashpoint: it is deployed to support materialism (if natural selection explains complexity, there is no need for a designer), to ground evolutionary psychology (if minds evolved, their structure reflects ancestral environments), to challenge religious anthropology (imago Dei becomes speciesist), and to explain altruism, cognition, and morality without appeal to transcendence. These deployments — and the objections to them — are the contexts in which John Lennox, Steven Pinker, and Iain McGilchrist each engage with evolution.

Pinker: evolution as the lens for mind and culture

Pinker is an evolutionary psychologist: he holds that the mind is an evolved organ, shaped by natural selection to solve the adaptive problems of ancestral environments. This is not merely a biological claim but a framework for understanding all of human psychology, including cognition, emotion, language, violence, and culture.

The language instinct: Pinker’s The Language Instinct (1994) argues that human language acquisition is not learned from a blank slate but follows from an innate, species-specific biological capacity — a ‘language acquisition device’ in the brain. The structural similarities of all human languages, the critical period for language learning, and the existence of sign languages among deaf children who are not exposed to sign language all point to a biological foundation. This is evolution applied to cognition: the mind is not a general-purpose learning machine but a collection of specialised, evolved modules. See Language and Mind.

The Blank Slate: The Blank Slate (2002) extends the argument to human nature generally. Against the ‘standard social science model’ — which treats human behaviour as almost entirely determined by culture and socialisation — Pinker argues that evolved human nature is real, structured, and measurable. The implications: universal human tendencies (tribalism, status competition, male/female psychological differences, in-group favouritism) are rooted in evolutionary history. They can be moderated by culture and institutions but not eradicated. See Rationality.

Violence and the Enlightenment: The Better Angels of Our Nature (2011) combines evolutionary and historical analysis to argue that violence has declined over the long run. The biological inheritance of aggression and tribalism is real, but human cognitive evolution also produced capacities for empathy, reason, and self-control — and Enlightenment institutions have increasingly channelled these against violence. Evolutionary psychology and its critics: Pinker is explicit that evolutionary psychology does not commit what Hume called the is-ought fallacy. The fact that humans evolved tribalistic tendencies does not mean tribalism is good; the fact that males evolved greater risk-taking does not mean male risk-taking should be encouraged. The evolutionary facts are inputs into moral reasoning, not conclusions. But for Lennox, there is a more fundamental problem: if moral intuitions themselves are evolutionary products selected for survival advantage, there is no reason to treat them as tracking moral truth. Lennox: accepting the science, contesting the extrapolation

Lennox is not a creationist in the young-earth or anti-evolutionary sense. He accepts biological evolution as the best current scientific account of the diversity of life. His objection is to the philosophical extrapolation from the biological theory to materialist metaphysics.

The design inference: Lennox draws on Michael Behe, Stephen Meyer, and William Dembski’s intelligent design arguments not as scientific competitors to evolution but as philosophical challenges to the sufficiency of the Darwinian mechanism. The standard reply — that natural selection acting on random variation can produce apparent design without a designer — is, for Lennox, insufficient as a complete metaphysical account. It addresses how complexity arises (gradualism + selection) but not why there is a biosphere capable of complexification in the first place.

Fine-tuning and the origin of life: Lennox regards the fine-tuning of physical constants (the cosmological constant, the strength of gravity, the mass of the proton) as evidence of intentional design behind the universe that allows evolution to occur. Evolution, on this account, is the mechanism by which a designed universe produces biological diversity — it does not eliminate the question of why the mechanism is possible. The origin of life itself — the first appearance of self-replicating information-bearing molecules from abiotic chemistry — remains, Lennox argues, unexplained by natural selection, which requires heritable variation to operate.

The EAAN applied to evolution: Plantinga’s evolutionary argument against naturalism is directly relevant here. If evolution produced human cognitive faculties for survival advantage rather than truth-tracking, there is no evolutionary reason to trust those faculties. This creates a self-undermining problem for the claim that evolution is true: the argument for evolution depends on trusting scientific reasoning, but naturalistic evolution undermines the trustworthiness of scientific reasoning. The resolution, for Lennox, is that human rationality is reliable because it reflects the rationality of a creator — evolution is the mechanism by which that rationality was instantiated in biological creatures. Moral evolution: Lennox accepts that evolutionary pressures shaped moral sensibilities (kin selection, reciprocal altruism, disgust responses). But he denies that evolutionary origins can ground moral normativity — the obligatory character of moral claims. That something evolved does not make it good; that cooperation evolved does not make cooperation right. For moral claims to be obligatory, there must be a moral lawgiver. McGilchrist: process, becoming, and the limits of mechanism

McGilchrist’s engagement with evolution is philosophical and phenomenological rather than scientific. He accepts biological evolution and draws on it, but his main concern is with the kind of explanation that evolutionary biology provides — and its limits.

Mechanism and organism: McGilchrist distinguishes between mechanistic explanations (evolution as the accumulation of small changes driven by selection pressure and genetic drift — efficient causation) and organic explanations (the organism as a whole, directed toward a form, expressing a nature — final causation in Aristotle’s sense). He is sympathetic to the philosophical tradition that sees mechanism as incomplete — not wrong, but insufficient to capture what is distinctive about living things.

Whitehead and process philosophy: McGilchrist draws on Alfred North Whitehead’s process philosophy, in which the fundamental units of reality are not material particles but occasions of experience — events with an intrinsic character. On this view, evolution is not merely the accumulation of useful structures but a process through which experience, meaning, and complexity deepen. The directionality of evolution — toward greater complexity, greater consciousness, greater capacity for experience — is not reducible to selection pressure but reflects something intrinsic to the cosmos. The right hemisphere’s organic knowing: For McGilchrist, the reductive evolutionary picture is a left-hemisphere construction: it breaks the organism into parts, identifies the selective advantages of each part, and assembles a causal story. This is not false, but it misses what the right hemisphere perceives — the organism as a whole, embedded in an environment, expressing a form of life that cannot be assembled from parts. Goethe’s morphology — the study of organic form as a whole — is his model for how to understand living things without reducing them to mechanisms.

Consciousness and evolution: McGilchrist’s panpsychism bears directly on evolution. If consciousness is an ontological primitive rather than an emergent property of biological complexity, evolution is the process by which the universe’s intrinsic experiential properties are expressed in increasingly complex organisms — not the process by which experience is generated from non-experiential matter. On this account, the question ‘how did consciousness evolve from non-conscious matter?’ is malformed; the correct question is ‘how does the cosmos’s intrinsic experiential character come to be expressed in beings like us?’ See Consciousness.

Where mainstream views differ

The scientific consensus accepts common descent and natural selection as the explanation for biological diversity. The specific mechanisms are contested (the role of genetic drift, epigenetics, niche construction, and extended evolutionary synthesis) but the core theory is not.

The philosophical disputes are more open:

Evolutionary psychology and its critics: evolutionary psychology is contested within science as well as philosophy. The charge of ‘just-so stories’ — untestable adaptationist narratives — has some force: for any observed psychological tendency, an evolutionary story can be constructed post hoc. Rigorous evolutionary psychology attempts to test its hypotheses with cross-cultural data, genetic evidence, and comparative animal behaviour, but critics argue it often falls short. Pinker is among the more rigorous practitioners, but even he concedes the field is imprecise.

Design inference: the mainstream view in philosophy of science is that the Intelligent Design movement, whatever its philosophical merits, does not constitute a scientific theory — it lacks the testability and falsifiability required. Lennox draws on ID arguments as philosophical challenges, not as competing scientific hypotheses, which is a more defensible position. Even so, the mainstream view is that fine-tuning arguments face serious objections: the anthropic principle (we could not observe a universe that did not allow our existence), the possibility of a multiverse, and the circularity of using our existence as evidence that existence is designed.

Process philosophy and mainstream biology: mainstream evolutionary biology operates within a mechanistic framework. Process philosophy (Whitehead) and organicism (Goodwin, Kauffman) are minority positions within biology, though they have found traction in the context of complex systems theory and self-organisation. McGilchrist’s deployment of these ideas is more philosophical than biological.

The common ground: all three speakers converge on the view that biological evolution, by itself, does not answer the deepest questions: it does not explain why there is something rather than nothing, why the universe is fine-tuned for life, what grounds moral normativity, or what consciousness is. Where they diverge is on what fills the explanatory gap: for Lennox, it is a personal creator; for McGilchrist, a cosmos with intrinsic experiential depth; for Pinker, the gap is smaller and the Enlightenment’s institutional and rational tools are sufficient to navigate it.
