Pavel Durov
Founder and CEO of Telegram, the encrypted messaging platform used by over a billion people, and earlier founder of VK, the largest social network in Russia and several neighbouring countries. Known equally for an austere personal regimen — no alcohol, minimal phone use, daily physical training — and for running Telegram with a roughly 40-person engineering team against sustained pressure from multiple governments.
Born in Russia and raised partly in Italy, Durov built VK’s first version alone at 20–21 before his brother Nikolai Durov, a two-time International Mathematical Olympiad gold medallist, joined to rewrite its core infrastructure in C and C++. Departing VK amid Russian government demands in 2011–14, Durov founded Telegram and has run it since as sole owner, with no outside shareholders. He was arrested in France in August 2024 and remains under investigation there; he disputes the basis of the case.
Core positions
- Small, deliberately understaffed engineering teams produce better systems than large ones, because a hard headcount ceiling forces automation and avoids the coordination overhead and morale cost of a bloated team. See Deliberate Understaffing.
- Privacy should be built into a platform’s architecture — no employee access to private messages by design — rather than promised as policy; claims of this kind should be independently checkable, which is why Telegram publishes its source code and offers reproducible builds.
- Owning a company outright, without shareholders, is what lets a founder hold a costly principle (refusing data requests, refusing politically-motivated takedowns) that a board could otherwise override.
- Self-restriction — in diet, substances, phone use, and inherited wealth for his children — produces purpose and capability; unconstrained abundance, in his account, tends toward social dysfunction.
