Nikolai Durov

Nikolai Durov

Russian mathematician and programmer, and the elder brother of Pavel Durov. A two-time gold medallist at the International Mathematical Olympiad and a two-time ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) champion, holding two PhDs in mathematics.

Nikolai wrote much of the low-level infrastructure behind both of his brother’s companies: VK’s data engines, search, and advertising systems (rewritten in C and C++ once the original PHP stack could no longer scale), and later TON’s ShardChain sharding design, the mechanism that lets the blockchain’s throughput grow with network size. He has stayed out of public view far more consistently than Pavel, giving almost no interviews.
