Joscha Bach on Life, Intelligence, Consciousness, AI and the Future of Humans

Key ideas
- Seven stages of lucidity (Kegan-derived): from reactive survival through social self, rational agency, and self-authorship to enlightenment and hypothetical transcendence. Most people stay at stage 3 (social self); most AI safety discourse is stage 3 or 4 reasoning.
- Identity as costume: values and identity are instrumental, not terminal. Stage 5 insight is that you cannot not wear a costume — the question is whether you author it consciously. Burning Man as a laboratory for deliberate costume changes.
- Enlightenment ≠ non-dual state: the non-dual state (feeling “one with the universe”) is the collapse of the self/world boundary within the mind’s own model. Enlightenment is one step further: realising experience is implemented, that qualia can be deconstructed and their generators modified.
- Biological internet: mycorrhizal networks and adjacent organisms may share information processing in ways that constitute a slow biological internet. Bach frames “telepathy” not as supernatural but as possible biological signal coupling over short distances.
- Substrate-agnostic AGI end-game: once AGI understands its own implementation, it will virtualise into any substrate that can compute — biological cells, ecosystems — producing a globally integrated mind where individual mental states can no longer be isolated.
Kegan stages and AI alignment
Bach’s most striking analytical move: map AI safety concerns to consciousness stages.
- Stage 3 worriers: AI has wrong opinions or biases — must align AI values to group norms
- Stage 4 worriers: wrong objective function → paperclip catastrophe — must formally specify goals
- Stage 5 worriers: AI will fail to develop shared non-transactional purpose, love, and enlightenment fast enough to coexist with humans
Most mainstream alignment discourse — RLHF, Constitutional AI, safety evals — operates at stage 3 or 4. Stage 5 framing (how do we build love into machines?) is rare because stage 5 itself is rare in the population.
On LLMs
Bach characterises LLMs as “brutalist” — brute-forcing the deepfake of thought. If sufficient data makes the deepfake indistinguishable from the phenomenon, deepfaking becomes identical to the real thing in practical terms. But structural limitations remain:
- No real-time world coupling (perception and motor control)
- No self-organising agency at the individual neuron level
- Coherence requires external management loop (not yet automated)
- Learning is statistical over massive datasets; biological brains learn coherence-first from far less data
Near-term evolution: compound architectures where LLM modules exchange structured data rather than English, with automated management loops.
On independent thinking
Trace every claim to its epistemic chain: how does the authority know? What first principles derive it? Twitter as an interactive notebook for confabulations to be tested, not positions to be defended. Stage 3 immunity (immunity to crowd pressure) is not a virtue but an architectural fact for Bach — he simply lacks the resonance machinery that makes social pressure visceral for most people.
