Mark Zuckerberg
Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Meta (formerly Facebook), which he started from a Harvard dorm room in 2004. Now oversees Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Meta’s Reality Labs division, the company’s bet on virtual and augmented reality hardware and the ‘Metaverse’.
Having built Facebook into the dominant social network of the 2010s, Zuckerberg redirected much of Meta’s long-term investment toward VR/AR hardware (the Quest headset line) and, from 2022, toward large language models and AI personas — releasing Llama as an open-weight model family and framing Meta’s AI strategy around many distributed AI personas rather than a single centralised system.
Core positions
- The ‘real world’ is the combination of the physical world and an increasingly rich digital layer, not the physical world alone — the underlying thesis of Meta’s Metaverse investment.
- Prefers many distributed AI personas — an assistant, business agents, entertainment characters, eventually creator-built personas — over a single AI ‘super intelligence’.
- Defends open-sourcing large models (Llama 2) as a considered, red-teamed judgement that the value of broad access outweighs the risk.
- New computing platforms should widen access, not just push the state of the art — reflected in pricing Quest 3 at a third of Quest Pro’s cost while improving mixed-reality fidelity.
