James Clear

James Clear is an American author and speaker best known for Atomic Habits (2018), one of the best-selling books ever written on habit formation. He also writes the 3-2-1 newsletter — short weekly instalments of ideas billed as ‘the most wisdom per word of any newsletter on the web’ — and co-founded the book publisher Author’s Equity.

Clear reached habits sideways. A college baseball player who assumed he would go to medical school, he found himself procrastinating on the MCAT and writing, unbidden, a sixty-page word document of thoughts on habits during idle afternoons at an orthopaedic practice. He began publishing two articles a week for three years, built an audience of hundreds of thousands, and turned that platform into a book deal. Atomic Habits was less an overnight success than the release of potential energy built over five prior years; it did well from its 2018 launch but only became a fixture of the bestseller lists through 2019.

Core positions

  • Systems over goals; identity beneath both. You do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems. Beneath the system sits identity: every action is a vote for the type of person you wish to become, and durable habits are the ones that supply evidence for an identity you take pride in.
  • Environment beats willpower. Most apparent discipline is a designed environment. The four laws of behaviour change — make it obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying — describe how to engineer surroundings so the desired behaviour is the path of least resistance, and their inversion how to break a habit.
  • Small, compounding, patient. Start at two minutes and standardise before optimising; trust the plateau of latent potential, where progress is stored before it is seen; and prize consistency over intensity, because consistency is what enlarges ability.
  • Craft as compression. A great non-fiction book earns its keep by how many other books it makes unnecessary. Clear treats every word as an obstacle between reader and result, compressing 600 pages of notes to 200 out of an ‘extreme respect for the reader’s time’.
