Notes — John Lennox on Science, God, and the Rationality of Belief
Notes on John Lennox — OCCA Oxford — The Veritas Forum, ~2019.
Four questions [Adler frame]
Q1 — What is it about? A formal lecture at Southern Methodist University in which Lennox mounts a systematic defence of rational theism against the new atheist case that science has made God obsolete. He argues that science and God occupy different explanatory levels, that scientism is self-refuting, that faith is evidence-based trust rather than credulity, that the God of classical theism is not threatened by scientific advance, and that questions of purpose and meaning fall outside science’s domain.
Q2 — How is it argued? Lennox relies on a small stock of vivid analogies — each doing serious philosophical work. The boiling kettle distinguishes mechanism from purpose. The Henry Ford / internal combustion engine analogy distinguishes creation from the mechanisms the created thing uses. Aunt Matilda’s cake shows that revelation is the only path to intentional knowledge that observation cannot recover. The Newton-versus-Hawking example shows that identical science generates opposite conclusions when different worldviews are applied — so the divergence is philosophical, not scientific. These analogies are then reinforced with historical data (Nobel laureates, founders of science) and philosophical argument (scientism’s self-refutation, Freud reversed).
Q3 — Is it true? The levels-of-explanation argument is philosophically sound and standard; the same move is made by Alvin Plantinga, Richard Swinburne, and (more technically) in philosophy of mind debates about multiple realisability. The scientism rebuttal is textbook. The claim about Nobel laureates (65%+ believing in God) draws on Baruch Aba Shalev’s 100 Years of Nobel Prizes (2003); the figure depends heavily on how ‘belief in God’ was operationalised and is disputed, though the existence of substantial theism among elite scientists is well-attested. [?source precision] The Wittgenstein quote paraphrase (‘laws of nature are not explanations but descriptions’) is accurate in substance, though I have not located the exact source in Wittgenstein’s published work. [?]
Q4 — What of it? This lecture is the clearest and most structured statement of Lennox’s core argument. The levels-of-explanation framework is the most philosophically durable element — it appears to be Lennox’s main contribution to the science-and-religion debate and is clean enough to be reused across contexts. The Aunt Matilda analogy in particular is pedagogically excellent: it shows why revelation is not epistemically primitive or irrational.
Glossary
Scientism — the claim that science is the only valid form of knowledge; distinguished from science itself. Self-refuting because the claim is not itself a scientific claim and cannot be verified scientifically.
Primary cause / secondary cause — distinction in classical theism: God as primary cause sustains the existence and rationality of the universe; physical mechanisms (gravity, combustion, natural selection) are secondary causes. Neither competes with the other or replaces it.
God of the gaps — the (defective) view of God as an explanation for phenomena science has not yet explained; a shrinking God that retreats as science advances. Lennox argues this is not the mainstream theological tradition’s God.
Levels of explanation — the principle that a single phenomenon can be correctly described by multiple explanatory frameworks (mechanistic, intentional, teleological) operating at different levels, without conflict or reduction. See Levels of Explanation.
Pistis / fides — Greek and Latin roots of ‘faith’; primary meaning is trust or fidelity, not credulity. Lennox distinguishes this from the Twain caricature.
Rational intelligibility of the universe — Einstein’s phrase for the assumption on which science depends: the universe is ordered, mathematical, accessible to reason. Lennox argues this is a faith position, and that theism grounds it more naturally than naturalism.
Wish-fulfilment argument — Freud’s psychological explanation for religious belief; Manfred Lutz’s reversal: the wish not to be accountable to God is an equally plausible psychological driver of atheism.
Section notes
The boiling kettle analogy
The kettle is boiling because (a) heat increases kinetic energy until molecules reach vaporisation temperature; (b) I want a cup of tea. Both answers are true; neither replaces the other. The error of reductionism is assuming (a) replaces (b). This is the key analogy for Levels of Explanation. It is equivalent to the Henry Ford analogy (the laws of internal combustion explain how the engine works, not whether Ford designed it) and the Aunt Matilda analogy (science explains ingredients and process, not why she made it). Lennox uses all three in this lecture; they are logically the same structure applied to different domains.
Newton vs. Hawking
Same physical law → opposite metaphysical conclusions. The difference is worldview. This is Lennox’s most effective rebuttal of the implicit claim that science is metaphysically neutral: it isn’t, because the conclusions drawn from science depend on the prior philosophical framework of the scientist. The history of science provides ample evidence: the pioneers (Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, Kelvin) were largely Christian; the inference pattern was ‘law → lawgiver.’ The new atheist inference pattern uses the same laws to argue against a lawgiver. The laws cannot adjudicate between these positions; something outside the laws has to.
Scientism’s self-refutation
The form: P = ‘science is the only way to truth.’ Is P itself a scientific statement? No. Therefore, by its own standard, P is not true. This is a standard philosophical reductio; Lennox uses it crisply. The stronger version: scientism is not merely unverifiable but unfalsifiable in Popper’s sense — there is no scientific experiment that could show that science is the only way to truth — which means, by Popper’s criterion (which the new atheists often invoke), scientism is pseudoscience.
God of the gaps vs. God of classical theism
The distinction is crucial and often missed:
- God of the gaps: God as a placeholder for ignorance, displaced by science’s advance. A legitimate target.
- God of classical theism: God as primary cause — the reason there are physical laws at all, the ground of existence, the source of rational intelligibility. Not in competition with secondary causes; not threatened by scientific advance.
Newton’s Principia is the reference point: Newton saw the law of gravity as evidence of God’s sustaining activity, not as a gap. The God of classical theism wants science to discover the mechanisms; they reveal the order of creation.
Faith as fidelity
Three examples Lennox uses:
- Sitting on an aeroplane: trust in engineering, backed by evidence (track record, instruments, qualifications).
- Trusting a doctor: evidence-based trust in training, track record, instruments.
- Einstein’s faith in rational intelligibility: a productive assumption about the universe, not derivable from the universe itself, but fruitful.
The common structure: trust based on evidence, open to revision. This is the same structure as scientific inference, not its opposite.
Wittgenstein on laws as descriptions
The paraphrase: ‘the great delusion of modernism is that the laws of nature are explanations of phenomena.’ The laws describe regularities; they don’t explain why those regularities exist. This is related to Hume on induction (the laws tell us what has happened; they give no ground for expecting the future to resemble the past) and to the more fundamental question: why is there a universe that is lawlike at all? Theism offers a non-circular answer (a rational God created a rationally ordered universe); naturalism cannot answer without circularity (the universe is lawlike because it is).
Freud reversed (Manfred Lutz)
Freud: religious belief is wish-fulfilment — people invent God to cope with the terrors of the universe and the loss of a paternal figure. Lutz (German psychiatrist): atheism is equally explicable as wish-fulfilment — the wish that there is no God to whom one is accountable. Both are arguments from psychology; neither establishes anything about whether God exists. The psychological genetic fallacy: explaining how a belief arose does not show whether it is true.
Lennox adds: the strength of a desire to believe something doesn’t determine whether it’s true. If I want the result of a calculation to be five, but the answer is seven, my desire doesn’t change the mathematics. Applied to religion: even if religious belief is psychologically motivated, it might still be true.
Aunt Matilda and revelation
The analogy: scientists analyse Aunt Matilda’s cake exhaustively but cannot recover her reason for making it without her telling them. When she tells them (‘for my cousin Jane’), they use their reason to evaluate the claim. Revelation is the only epistemically legitimate route to intentional knowledge — knowledge of purposes, reasons, and personal agency — that observation cannot reach. This is Lennox’s argument for the rationality of Scripture: not that it replaces or contradicts science, but that it addresses questions science is structurally incapable of answering.
