Ryan Singer

Product designer and strategist. One of the first hires at 37signals (now trading as Basecamp and back to 37signals), where he spent 17 years building Basecamp alongside Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson. Author of Shape Up, the free online book that codified the product development method developed at 37signals. Left in 2021; subsequently runs consulting and the Shaping in Real Life course to help teams adapt Shape Up outside the Basecamp context.

Key ideas

  • Shape Up — fixed appetite + variable scope; shaping before building; six-week time boxes; teams take responsibility for tasks once given a well-shaped idea
  • Shaping is live and collaborative, not documentary — requires product, a knowledgeable senior engineer, and a designer in the same room
  • The PM’s highest-leverage work is upstream problem framing, not build-phase shepherding
  • Most Shape Up failures trace to insufficient shaping, not excess detail
  • Basecamp’s working conditions (designers who code, no sales org, direct founder involvement) are rare; real-life teams must explicitly bridge the product–engineering wall

Books

  • Shape Up — free at basecamp.com; the canonical reference for the method
