Nick Lane

Nick Lane is a biochemist and Professor of Evolutionary Biochemistry at University College London, and one of the most widely read writers on the deep questions of biology. His books — Oxygen, Power, Sex, Suicide, Life Ascending, The Vital Question and Transformer — pursue a single thread: that life is governed first by energy, and only then by information. Where most accounts of life’s origin and evolution start with genes, Lane starts with the flow of electrons across membranes, and asks what that constraint makes inevitable, rare, or impossible.

His research programme tries to recreate, in the laboratory, the chemistry by which life could have begun in alkaline hydrothermal vents — the proton gradients and CO₂-plus-hydrogen reactions he argues are the real spark of life. He works deliberately at the edge of what is known, and writes for the curious fifteen-year-old he once was: take the biggest childlike questions, say plainly what we know, and be honest about the much larger territory we do not.

  • Energy before information. Life is a continuous chemical reaction powered by electrical charge across membranes, not a soup of molecules that one day comes alive. The early Earth is a giant battery, and a cell is a micro-version of the same topology. This bioenergetic framing is the lens through which Lane reads every later question.

  • Life began in hydrothermal vents. A wet rocky planet leaking hydrogen across charged mineral pores supplies, for free, the gradients and reactants that living biochemistry uses. Lane rejects both the primordial soup (no structure, no flow) and panspermia (merely relocates the question) as explanations that cannot be tested step by step.

  • The complex cell is the great filter. The eukaryotic cell — the kind that builds plants and animals — arose exactly once, when one cell engulfed another and the guest became the mitochondrion. That single endosymbiosis lifted available energy per gene a hundred-thousandfold. Because it took two billion years and never recurred, Lane judges complex life rare, even where bacteria are common — and so reads the Fermi paradox pessimistically.

  • Sex and death are built into complexity. Large genomes must be defended against mutation, which forces sex; programmed cell death is the same machinery that sculpts a complex body. Evolution, on his account, happens because of death.

  • Consciousness, not evolution, is the open mystery. Intelligence he sees as complicated computing, not a logical puzzle; the unsolved question is how a discharging neuron produces a feeling. He is sceptical of panpsychism and of ‘emergence’ used as a cover for ignorance, and suspects the answer involves the electrical fields of cells — and may come from outside biology.
