Neri Oxman

Designer, architect, and scientist who works at the meeting point of computational design, digital fabrication, materials science, and synthetic biology. She founded and led the Mediated Matter group at the MIT Media Lab and, in 2005, coined the field of Material Ecology — the idea that every material object can be designed as part of the ecology, grown rather than assembled, so that making things heals nature rather than depleting it. She now runs Oxman, a company pursuing that ambition end to end, from CO₂ to a product that returns to the soil and grows an edible plant.

At MIT her group built a celebrated body of work that landed in major museums and peer-reviewed journals alike — her own standard was ‘MoMA and the cover of Nature at the same time’. The Silk Pavilion was spun by 17,532 silkworms guided by robotic templates; the Vespers death masks grew their pigment patterns from E. coli; the Synthetic Apiary kept bees reproductive through winter and later sent a colony to space aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard, returning a Nature paper proving that bees recycle wax. Each project paired a new technology — a glass printer, a spinning robot, a bee life-support system — with new science about the organism or material it used.

Core positions

Oxman’s organising conviction is that humankind’s products have separated us from nature for 200,000 years, and that the same tools of engineering and computation can reverse that separation. She frames the present moment by Ron Milo’s finding that anthropomass — everything humans have built — overtook the planet’s biomass in 2020, and asks whether everything in the technosphere could instead be designed as if it belonged to the biosphere.

Her method is computational templating: guiding ‘hero organisms’ — silkworms, bees, bacteria — through physical, environmental, chemical, and geometric scaffolds, with the goal of templating until templating is no longer needed and genuine emergence takes over. (‘If you can predict, it doesn’t count as emergence.’) She holds a deliberate ethical range across the kingdoms of life: she refused to make silkworms transgenic but works freely with bacteria, on the principle that one should design with an organism only when it benefits the organism too — the win-win, ‘a whole that’s bigger than the sum of its parts’.

She wants to give nature the computational bandwidth humans already enjoy: ‘large molecule models’ to decode the chemical language plants and microbes use, so nature might ‘make decisions for herself’. Her first molecular product is a functionalised fragrance — a scent given agency to inspire a rose garden rather than merely please a wearer. Underlying it all is a long-timescale patience — she is unafraid to build products in the scale of thousands of years — and a belief that beauty is agency, that imperfection is necessary, and that love, vulnerability, and ‘suspending disbelief’ are as central to creative work as any technology.
