Mike Krieger
Mike Krieger is Chief Product Officer at Anthropic and co-founder of Instagram. He studied human-computer interaction at Stanford, where he also built early iPhone apps with Joel Lewenstein (later an Anthropic colleague). After Instagram (acquired by Facebook), he built Artifact (a personalised news app, co-founded with Kevin Systrom), which he shut down in early 2024 before joining Anthropic.
He joined Anthropic after Claude 3 launched, drawn by the founders’ intellectual honesty and commitment to responsible AI development.
Key ideas
- AI-native development: Anthropic writes over 90% of its code with AI; the Claude Code team is estimated at 95%+. Anthropic is “patient zero” for this way of working.
- The new bottlenecks: when engineering velocity becomes unlimited, the critical path moves to deciding what to build (alignment) and getting changes into production (merge queue, code review).
- Product × research embedding: the highest-leverage PM role is inside the model training and post-training work, not in UX.
- MCP: model intelligence × context/memory × applications/UI = product utility. MCP solves the under-invested middle layer (context and memory).
- Durable PM skills: comprehensibility (closing the gap between what models can do and how most people use them), strategy (where to play), and opening people’s eyes to what is possible.
