Australian-born scientist and writer best known as co-author (with Isaac Chuang) of Quantum Computation and Quantum Information (2000), the field’s canonical textbook, and for his freely distributed online book on neural networks, which reached an unusually wide audience by being given away rather than sold.

Nielsen’s career has crossed several fields in sequence: quantum computing (1992–2007), open science (co-founding and advocating for preprint culture and open-access norms), meta-science (co-authoring with Patrick Collison on the apparent slowdown in scientific progress), and tools for thought (writing on spaced repetition, Jupyter Notebooks, and cognitive augmentation). He has been affiliated with Y Combinator Research and is based in San Francisco, where he is drawn to the city’s density of ambitious young people as a source of intellectual renewal.

Core positions

Nielsen selects collaborators for a complementary skill he lacks, not for similarity, and treats younger people he genuinely learns from as mentors rather than as students — an empirical practice he traced to observing which older physicists aged well. He is optimistic about quantum computing’s eventual arrival but agnostic on timing; the most plausible near-term application is accelerating materials discovery through quantum simulation. On open science, he holds that the concept of openness is too vague — what matters is the kind of artefact opened and the norms surrounding it, not access per se. He is genuinely concerned about civilisational fragility, sees near-universal surveillance as its uncomfortable corollary, and thinks getting a million people off Earth is the only durable hedge. His personal epistemology treats legibility and mystery as co-expanding rather than opposed: making things legible pushes the frontier of the illegible further out.
