Matthew MacDougall
Head neurosurgeon at Neuralink, responsible for the surgical procedure that implants the company’s N1 device. Trained through an MD-PhD split between USC and Caltech, drawn to Caltech specifically by primate neuroscientist Richard Andersen’s macaque lab, where he worked on Utah-array recordings of movement intention — the rigid-electrode lineage Neuralink’s own flexible threads are built to improve on. Before medicine, he studied primatology under Frans de Waal at Emory, an influence he credits with teaching him to strip false complexity from human behaviour by reducing it to more basic drives.

MacDougall’s defining claim about Neuralink’s safety philosophy is comparative: routine deep-brain-stimulation surgery, which places electrodes deep in the brain along an unvisualised path, carries roughly a 1-in-100 risk of bleeding — a bar he considers unacceptable for Neuralink, which he says aims to be two to three orders of magnitude safer, ‘safe enough that you or I… might on our lunch break someday say, “yeah, sure, I’ll get that.”’ Achieving that currently confines the device to the cortical surface, where the surgical robot’s vision system can see and avoid blood vessels.
On consciousness, shaped by direct surgical experience of the brain, he offers a deliberately deflationary account: consciousness, in his view, is not a separate, mysterious substance but simply ‘the sensation of some part of your brain being active’ — ‘it’s all electrical activity happening inside your skull.’ On mortality, he states there is ‘zero chance’ his own generation escapes death, a view he holds candidly alongside the personal toll of the job — quoting the surgeon-author Henry Marsh’s line that ‘every neurosurgeon carries with them a private graveyard.’ Asked whether he would take a Neuralink implant himself, he says yes on safety grounds alone, though he sees no compelling case for it yet beyond controlling a mouse — something he can already do unaided.
