Gustav Söderström

Co-president, Chief Product Officer, and CTO of Spotify (14 years). Joined in 2008–09 to lead mobile when streaming over edge networks was not yet technically viable — a product and business-model problem he solved by inventing the mobile-restricted free tier. Has since taken on all product development and, later, the CTO role. Now co-runs the company alongside Alex Nordstrom (business and content side), both reporting to Daniel Ek.

Known for: the Curation → Recommendation → Generation three-era framework for internet platform evolution; the fault-tolerant UI design principle (calibrate UI multiplicity to actual ML hit rate); the candid critique of Spotify’s own squads model (moved to VP-level autonomy at scale); the Spotify home screen redesign postmortem; and the “think it, build it, ship it, tweak it” four-phase product vocabulary. Runs internal Spotify podcasts to make senior leadership approachable and transmitted Spotify’s product strategy to employees before going external.
