Don Lincoln

Senior Scientist at Fermilab and experimental particle physicist; known for his decades of work at the frontier of high-energy physics and for making particle physics accessible to general audiences.

Lincoln has spent his career at Fermilab and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, working on the CMS experiment. He was part of the team that discovered the top quark at Fermilab’s Tevatron in 1995 and subsequently contributed to LHC experiments. Lincoln is an experimentalist, and this shapes his epistemology. He is sceptical of theoretical frameworks — particularly string theory — that have not produced testable predictions after decades of effort. His view: a beautiful theory is worthless until validated. He distinguishes between what we know (the Standard Model, confirmed to extraordinary precision), what we strongly suspect (dark matter is a real substance; dark energy is a property of space), and what we are projecting without evidence (theories at the Planck scale, 10¹⁵ times beyond the reach of current accelerators).

On the theory of everything, he is deliberately cautious: the unification scale is so far from anything we can probe that he considers confident claims about Planck-scale physics — whether from string theory or any other framework — a ‘pinnacle of arrogance’. His preferred path is to follow the measurements that disagree with known theory and let those anomalies guide new physics, rather than extrapolating from elegant mathematics.
