Demis Hassabis
CEO and co-founder of Google DeepMind. Neuroscientist (PhD UCL), chess prodigy, and game developer (Theme Park, Black & White) before founding DeepMind in 2010. Nobel Prize in Chemistry co-winner (2024) for AlphaFold. Arguably the person most responsible for demonstrating that AI can accelerate scientific discovery.
Background
Began programming games professionally as a teenager. Studied computer science at Cambridge (double first), then neuroscience PhD at UCL focusing on the hippocampus and memory. Founded DeepMind in 2010; acquired by Google in 2014. Led AlphaGo (defeated world Go champion Lee Sedol, 2016), AlphaZero, AlphaFold 2 (2020 — solved protein folding), and AlphaFold 3 (2024).
