David Epstein

American science journalist and author. Former Sports Illustrated staff writer. Author of The Sports Gene (2013), Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialised World (2019, NYT #1 bestseller), and Inside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better (2025).

Epstein’s work is unified by a commitment to finding what is actually true against conventional wisdom. Range challenged the 10,000-hour rule and specialist obsession; Inside the Box challenges the assumption that freedom maximises creativity. A recurring method: find apparent contradictions, dive in, and find reality within them. His range of references spans Herbert Simon’s bounded rationality, Eliyahu Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints, Gloria Mark’s attention research, Pixar’s creative process, and Delta blues musicians.

Trained as a scientist (ecology, science journalism). Known for extreme investigative commitment — e.g., road-tripping rural Mississippi at midnight to sit in a cemetery to understand Robert Johnson’s practice environment; conducting three interviews with Isabelle Allende to observe her creative rituals.
