David Deutsch

David Deutsch

British physicist at the University of Oxford and a founding figure of quantum computation — he wrote the first paper setting out the quantum circuit model (1985) and is widely credited with founding the field. Author of The Fabric of Reality (1997) and The Beginning of Infinity (2011), the two books that develop his unified account of knowledge, physics, and progress.

Deutsch holds that the four deepest theories of reality — quantum mechanics in its Everettian form, epistemology in its Popperian form, the theory of computation, and Darwinian evolution — are not separate disciplines but aspects of a single underlying picture of how knowledge grows. His work on quantum algorithms demonstrated that a quantum computer could, in principle, perform calculations no classical computer could replicate in any reasonable time, a result that simultaneously vindicated the many-worlds interpretation (parallel computations are carried out in parallel branches of the multiverse) and opened the field now called quantum computing.

Core positions

Knowledge is unlimited and the universe is comprehensible in principle. Deutsch’s central philosophical claim — running from The Fabric of Reality through his conversations and public writing — is that there is no hard ceiling on what can be understood. Positing such a ceiling is, he argues, logically equivalent to supernaturalism: it invokes a principle that is immune to criticism and empirically indistinguishable from attributing the unexplained residue to Zeus or Odin.

Humans are unique in producing explanatory knowledge: theories that state not just what happens but why. Animals other than humans transmit behaviour by imitation and encode knowledge in genes, both of which are fixed and non-revisable under criticism. A gorilla with a thumb injury repeats every motion of a learned technique, including the ones the injury makes pointless, because it has the routine without the reason. Human knowledge, by contrast, is revised through conjecture and criticism — the Popperian mechanism that Deutsch sees as continuous between science, politics, and personal identity.

The political implication is that good institutions are those that maximise error correction, not those that select wise rulers. This aligns Deutsch with the Popperian tradition but extends it: the same principle that makes the first-past-the-post electoral system better than proportional representation (clear accountability, easy removal of bad governments) makes anti-authoritarian epistemology better than justificationist epistemology (knowledge grows by criticism, not by accumulating authority). Rights, on this view, belong to all persons — children, potential AGI — because any other basis requires the system to reliably identify who is right in a dispute, which no institution can do.
