Dan Loeb
Founder and CEO of Third Point, the activist hedge fund he started in 1995 with $3m and has grown into a roughly $25bn multi-strategy platform. One of the defining activist investors of his generation — known for pointed public letters to boards and chairs, and for a rare fluency that lets a single mind move across equity, credit, and event-driven strategies.
Loeb learned the trade as a credit and distressed-debt analyst at Jefferies, watching the era’s best event-driven investors operate. His first framework came from Joel Greenblatt’s You Can Be a Stock Market Genius — spin-offs, demutualisations, and newly created securities mispriced by forced selling — before he layered a business-quality lens on top, drawing on The Outsiders and Cunningham’s Quality Investing. The result is an investor who prices the whole capital structure and buys wherever the ‘fulcrum security’ offers the best risk-reward.
Core positions
- Every serious investor must now be a technology investor: AI is a big, compounding part of the economy that affects everything else, so opting out of tech is no longer available.
- The durable edge is a single mind that can price a company’s whole capital structure — equity, senior and junior debt, private and public — and move to the fulcrum security.
- Activism targets the gap between status and performance: companies that hold themselves out as high-status but no longer earn it, pressured most effectively through writing and PR rather than the proxy fight alone.
- A board’s primary duty is to shareholders; most bad governance is a board’s loyalty to an unfit CEO overriding its fiduciary role.
- The current AI build-out is not the dot-com bubble — it is funded from hyperscaler cash flow, not debt, at undemanding multiples — and human judgement persists wherever markets stay illiquid and negotiated (credit, restructurings, private equity).
