In the wiki

  • The founder who passed Schottenstein’s bar. In Julia Schottenstein on M&A Strategy, dbt Labs, and Why Worse Is Better, Handy is the ‘people’ dimension made concrete: Schottenstein’s read on him was that he could paint a compelling future for the industry and go deep on the day-to-day analytics-engineering work — a range she found rare. She spent a year trying to win the dbt investment to back him, lost it to Sequoia, and then asked him for a job.
  • The dbt thesis. Handy and co-founders Drew and Connor believed the analysts closest to the business — anyone who knows SQL — should also build clean production data assets, work historically reserved for data engineers. dbt’s simplicity-as-power and open-core model grew from that conviction, seeded during ~two years running the consultancy Fishtown Analytics.
