Four questions [Adler frame]

Q1 — What is it about? A two-part conversation probing McGilchrist’s The Matter With Things (2021), a ~2,000-page argument that the brain’s two hemispheres instantiate fundamentally different modes of attending to reality, and that the left hemisphere’s mode — narrowly focused, certainty-seeking, representational — has become culturally dominant with civilisational consequences. The work moves from neuropsychology through epistemology to metaphysics, ending in panpsychism: consciousness as an ontological primitive, not a biological product.

Q2 — How is it argued? Three-part structure mirrors the book: (I) neuropsychological evidence for hemisphere differences; (II) epistemological consequences — how we know, what counts as truth; (III) metaphysical implications — time, space, quantum mechanics, consciousness, purpose. Q3 — Is it true? The neuropsychological case (opponent-processing hemispheres, cross-inhibition, Goldberg’s novelty research, Wada tests) rests on real experimental literature, though the pop-cultural legacy makes it politically fraught. The metaphysical claims — panpsychism, consciousness as ontological primitive, teleology — are more contested; McGilchrist is honest that he is not a physicist and vets physics claims with colleagues. Rutt’s counterweight (Searle on consciousness, 85% of physicists rejecting the measurement-problem / consciousness link) is well-founded. The epistemological chapter’s main claim — that Western modernity over-privileges left-brain attending — is cultural diagnosis more than falsifiable claim, but has significant convergent support from complexity science and phenomenology.

Q4 — What of it? If McGilchrist is right, or even substantially right, the implications are large: our institutional structures (academia’s incentive to close questions fast; bureaucratic rule-replacement of judgment; algorithmic recommendation replacing attention) are systematically left-hemisphere enhancing. The ‘meta-crisis’ — the cluster of civilisational stresses — may be an attention disorder at scale. The corrective is not mysticism but the kind of wide, vigilant, context-retaining attention that the right hemisphere is built for, and that good science, great art, and clinical wisdom have always used.


Glossary

Corpus callosum — the principal band of fibres (about 2% of total neurons) linking the two brain hemispheres, primarily inhibitory rather than simply communicatory. The size of this divide has been amplified by evolution, not reduced — the puzzle that motivates McGilchrist’s inquiry.

Hemispheric lateralisation — the fact that the two brain hemispheres have reliably different functional signatures, not because they house different skills, but because they maintain different modes of attention. Not ‘creative vs. logical’ (the pop-science myth); rather focused/narrow/certain vs. vigilant/contextual/ambiguous.

Left-hemisphere attending — narrow, highly focused, context-stripping, certainty-prioritising, manipulation-oriented. Good at catching a seed, identifying a known predator, building a machine, filling in a form. Tends towards abstraction, categorisation, and false confidence. Lateralises anger.

Right-hemisphere attending — broad, vigilant, context-retaining, ambiguity-tolerating, relational, animate-sensitive. Handles novelty first (Goldberg); understands implicit communication — irony, metaphor, body language — that a computer cannot parse. Lateralises mild pessimism (more accurate self-assessment). Understands depth in space, time, and emotion.

Presencing — McGilchrist’s term (from Heidegger): the right hemisphere presences the world by bringing it into vivid, contextual, phenomenological being. The moment the left hemisphere recognises and categorises it, the world is re-presented — substituted by an abstract representation that loses the gestalt. Analogy: a map that you mistake for the territory.

Opponent processing — Sherrington’s concept: fine control through the balance of two opposing forces, more precise than either alone. The two hemispheres cross-inhibit each other; the result is finer discrimination than either acting unilaterally. When the balance collapses (e.g., after a right-hemisphere stroke) the left hemisphere’s over-confidence runs unchecked — anosognosia: denial of obvious paralysis.

Ontological primitive — a thing that cannot be reduced to or derived from something more fundamental. McGilchrist argues consciousness has this status: no account of how unconscious matter could produce it has any explanatory force, so consciousness must be foundational to reality rather than emergent from it.

Panpsychism — the position that consciousness (or proto-experiential properties) is not exclusive to complex biological systems but a fundamental feature of the cosmos. McGilchrist’s position; supported by his reading of what Ramachandran and Blakemore concede in the Oxford Handbook. Contrasts with Searle’s ‘consciousness is a specific biological phenomenon.’

Savoir / connaître (French) — two words for ‘knowing’ that English collapses into one: savoir = propositional knowledge (‘Paris is the capital of France’), connaître = acquaintance knowledge (‘I know Paris from having lived there’). McGilchrist uses this to argue that Anglophone epistemology, lacking the lexical distinction, wastes energy on pseudo-disputes about what ‘knowing’ really means.

Coherence vs. correspondence truth — two theories. Correspondence: a proposition is true if it accurately maps a fact (left hemisphere’s preferred model). Coherence: a belief is true if it coheres with an entire web of beliefs, experiences, and embodied knowing (closer to the right hemisphere’s mode).

Teleology — purposiveness or directional tendency in nature. McGilchrist distinguishes extrinsic teleology (a designer’s predetermined plan) from intrinsic teleology (a genuine tendency that is not mechanistic). He argues life exhibits intrinsic teleology; it is an infinite game, not a machine headed for a specified output.

Deterministic chaos — a Newtonian system that is theoretically deterministic but practically unpredictable because tiny measurement errors cascade exponentially. The solar system cannot be predicted beyond ~50 million years for this reason. Rutt uses this to caution against over-claiming quantum randomness at human scales; unpredictability ≠ randomness.


Section I — Neuropsychology

Why two hemispheres?

The puzzle is not that the brain has two parts but that the divide is maintained and deepened by evolution, with most inter-hemispheric traffic being inhibitory (‘stay out, I’m handling this’). McGilchrist’s answer: animals need to attend in two fundamentally incompatible ways simultaneously — the focused predatory grasp and the vigilant surveillance for predators — and a single architecture cannot do both at once. The corpus callosum enables the right hand to know (broadly) what the left hand is doing, while preventing mutual interference.

Evidence from comparative biology: nematostella vectensis (700 million years old, the ancestor of higher-animal brains) already has an asymmetrical neural network. The asymmetry is not a late mammalian invention; it is the origin of brain structure.

The pop-myth and the real distinction

Most of what the culture has absorbed — ‘left brain = rational, right brain = creative’ — is false. McGilchrist distinguishes between:

Presencing and re-presenting in practice

Any new experience goes to the right hemisphere first (Goldberg’s research). The right takes it in as a whole, vivid presence. The left, recognising it, categorises it — puts it in a box — and the box substitutes for the experience. This is efficient for manipulation but disastrous for understanding. In academia: publish-or-perish incentives force premature closure, destroying the productive ambiguity the right hemisphere needs.

The deer example (Rutt’s thought experiment): the deer uses left-hemisphere attention to assess whether the grass is edible, right-hemisphere attention to detect a disturbance in the tall grass. Birds will turn their heads to put their left visual field (right hemisphere) toward a predator and their right visual field (left hemisphere) toward prey.

Cross-inhibition as opponent processing

The frontal lobes of each hemisphere inhibit the posterior cortex of the same side: left frontal lobes slow left-hemisphere reactivity; right frontal lobes slow right-hemisphere impulsiveness. The right hemisphere also inhibits left-hemisphere over-confidence (‘hang on, we don’t actually know that’). Without this, anosognosia results: patients with right-hemisphere strokes deny their obvious paralysis because the left hemisphere, unmoderated, refuses to accept disconfirming information.


Section II — Epistemology

Correspondence vs. coherence

The left hemisphere’s model of truth is correspondence — a proposition accurately maps a fact in the world. This is useful for engineering and formal logic. The right hemisphere’s model is closer to coherence: a belief is credible when it coheres with the full web of embodied experience, sensory richness, and relational context.

McGilchrist argues Western philosophy (especially in the Anglophone tradition) has over-privileged correspondence truth, partly because English has only one word for ‘know’ where French and German have two. The result is a tradition that mistakes propositional accuracy for the whole of knowledge, systematically disadvantaging tacit and embodied knowing — everything that connaître captures that savoir does not.

Science, intuition, imagination

McGilchrist does not attack science; he attacks a narrow reading of it. Science, at its best, uses imagination (hypothesis generation), intuition (where to look), reason (formal argument), and observation — all four. What he resists is the reduction of ‘scientific’ to ‘propositional, certain, reproducible’, which excludes the inquiry that generates new hypotheses in the first place.

Reductionism

Reductionism is the method of taking things apart to understand them. It works for machines (the parts are prior to the assembly) and yields genuine results (intervention in causal chains). But it fails for complex wholes because relations are prior to the things related: when you take a symphony apart into notes, you lose exactly what makes it a symphony. The parts taken in isolation are silence.

This is not mysticism. Complexity science (Santa Fe Institute) reaches the same conclusion through agent-based modelling: emergence means the higher-level patterns are real and causally active, not mere epiphenomena of the parts. The two frameworks — McGilchrist’s phenomenological one and Rutt’s complexity science one — converge here.

Organisms vs. machines: organisms are (a) open systems far from equilibrium, (b) self-differentiating (not assembled), (c) self-writing (DNA is a supply store, not a blueprint — the cell calls on it in ways it was not ‘programmed’ for), (d) unable to be switched off and restarted (death is irreversible), (e) embedded in environment rather than closed inside defined borders. Machines are none of these things.


Section III — Metaphysics

Time and space

McGilchrist argues continuous time is philosophically important against the view that time is discrete at the Planck scale. Rutt counters that even if time is discontinuous at Planck length (~10⁻⁴³ seconds), this is so far below human-relevant scale as to be practically irrelevant. David Tong (Cambridge) — whom McGilchrist cites — finds no experimental evidence for discontinuity in either time or space; Planck length is an artefact of measurement limits.

Quantum mechanics and consciousness

McGilchrist aligns with the minority (~15–20% of physicists, per Rutt) who believe consciousness is implicated in quantum field collapse. His argument: attention directed at a quantum system changes what is observed — the collapse of a field into a measurable point is not independent of the observer’s consciousness. Rutt counters: the vast majority of physicists treat measurement as a size/probability matter, not a consciousness matter; and the dozen major quantum interpretations remain experimentally indistinguishable.

Both agree that quantum mechanics is widely misappropriated to justify claims at human scales that the physics does not support.

Feynman’s aphorism (relayed by McGilchrist): ‘If you understand quantum mechanics, you don’t understand quantum mechanics.‘

Consciousness

The sharpest disagreement in both episodes.

Rutt/Searle: consciousness is a specific biological phenomenon that evolved at least twice (vertebrates, cephalopods). It is expensive to maintain and serves a defined function: generating a subjective movie of the world in which the organism believes itself to be acting. Intelligence (self-driving cars, E. coli chemotaxis, slime-mould maze-solving) is distinct from consciousness: all these things learn and respond adaptively without subjective experience.

McGilchrist/panpsychism: consciousness cannot emerge from the unconscious — there is no explanatory account of how it could. This makes consciousness an ontological primitive. McGilchrist is not committed to full-blown panpsychism (rocks are not conscious in the way we are) but to the view that experiential properties are fundamental to the cosmos. Ramachandran and Blakemore concede this in the Oxford Handbook.

The slime-mould point: cut a piece of slime mould off and it retains the memory of how to solve a maze. This suggests something more than programmed response — the cell’s intelligence is holographic in a way that no engineered artefact is.

Teleology and purpose

McGilchrist distinguishes:

  • Extrinsic teleology: something was designed with a specific end in mind (a toaster)
  • Intrinsic teleology: a genuine directional tendency that is not predetermined (a seedling becoming a tree)

Life exhibits intrinsic teleology. Rutt’s own trajectory (pulled toward intellectual possibility rather than mechanically pushed) exemplifies this. The finite/infinite games distinction (Carse): life is not a game headed for a fixed result but one whose purpose is to keep the game going — open, generative, self-perpetuating.

On fine-tuning and the Fermi paradox: both are agnostic about extraterrestrial intelligence. McGilchrist’s panpsychism implies the cosmos is, in principle, hospitable to experiential life everywhere; neither commits to it being widespread.


What this adds to the wiki

This is the first deep treatment of philosophy of mind in a non-AI context. It introduces:

  1. Brain lateralisation as a lens on culture and civilisation (not just cognition)
  2. Panpsychism as a live philosophical position — distinct from the AI-consciousness debates in Joscha Bach on Life, Intelligence, Consciousness, AI and the Future of Humans
  3. A sustained argument for the limits of reductionism from outside the complexity-science tradition, converging with it

The McGilchrist / Rutt exchanges are unusually well-matched: both are polymaths, both argue from evidence, both resist the two obvious failure modes (vague mysticism on one side; vulgar materialism on the other). Their disagreement on consciousness is genuinely open.
